Eczema Is also known as Atopic dermatitis which is a chronic inflammatory condition of the skin and it will cause the skin red and itchy. This lasts for a long time and flares up periodically. It is more common in children but can be found among adults as well.

Atopic dermatitis bears significant health burden to healthcare resources and quality of life of the affected with 20% children affected worldwide and about 5% adults. In the USA, 31.6 million are estimated to have symptoms of eczema, including 17.8 million with symptoms of atopic dermatitis. It affects 10% of the total population in the USA. Epidemiological trends show this is more prevalent among people living in the developed countries than in developing countries.

The first manifestation of atopic dermatitis appears early in life and is most often following allergic conditions such as asthma, allergic rhinitis or hay fever. There are many causes behind atopic dermatitis and modern-day research has revealed most of the people affected by eczema has a genetic predisposition with genetic mutations. However, it alone may not cause disease as this is allergic conditions immune systems that produce antibodies against the different allergens are always involved.

Eczema is a dermatological manifestation of the disease that occurs by an interaction of a dysfunctional epidermal barrier in genetically predisposed individuals with harmful effects of environmental agents which leads to the development of the disease. Therefore, this is considered as an allergic skin disease.

Symptom include dry skin, itching, which may be severe, especially at night, red to brownish-gray patches, especially on the hands, feet, ankles, wrists, neck, upper chest, eyelids, inside the bend of the elbows and knees, and in infants, the face and scalp, small, raised bumps, which may leak fluid and crust over when scratched, thickened, cracked, scaly skin, raw, sensitive and swollen skin from scratching.

There is no cure found for atopic dermatitis and all the medication is intended at relieving symptoms such as rash, itching, rhinitis. The topical applications are intended at moisturizing creams to help reduce itching and reduce the flare-ups.

Side effects of modern medication and topical applications has caused an increase in alternative medicine for treating atopic dermatitis. One of the key theories behind allergies in the developed countries is based on the “hygiene hypothesis” where people are more prone to develop immune reactions to certain allergens like pollens, dust very rapidly as improved cleanliness and hygienic practices making their immune system vulnerable to these triggers.

Many natural extracts have been found in clinical trials to reduce the symptoms of eczema and atopic dermatitis. A lot of studies have been done on anti-allergenic properties of plant compound and the ability to suppress the antibodies that cause dermatological reactions.

When an allergen enters through respiratory passage it gets engulfed by the body's defense cells like macrophages which stimulate immune cells to realize chemicals and antibodies. Antibodies like IgE, and chemical like histamine cause itching and cause dermatological reactions.

Nux Vomica has been shown through research to suppress the allergen-specific IgE antibodies that cause rashes and itching. Sulfur has shown to suppress itching and secondary infection of the skin rash with fungal and bacterial infections.

Figwort also knew as Scrophularia nodosa is an herbaceous plant grown in the temperate regions. It has well-known effects in reducing symptoms of eczema and reducing itching, rhinitis, dry skin by moisturizing the skin thereby the imporving quality of life.

These herbal remedies have shown to cut the healthcare expenditure by more than 72% and improve symptoms rapidly with no adverse effects.
